The Story

Berkeley Bee’s Heart Foundation was created in loving memory of our beautiful baby girl Berkeley Maize Best.  Berkeley (nicknamed Berkeley Bee) fought the good fight and overcame some incredible odds during her short time on this earth.  She touched more lives than one can count and we know that she will continue to do so.

Berkeley was prenatally diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome with an intact atrial septum.  She underwent the Norwood BT shunt surgery at four days old and bidirectional Glenn operation when she was five months old. Her course was a complicated one that kept her hospitalized for the entire ten and a half months that she was on this earth.  Berkeley battled bacterial and fungal bloodstream infections, blood clots, severe feeding intolerance, strokes, seizures, and multiple cardiac arrests.  Her body and spirit fought courageously until the Lord called her home on August 27, 2016.

We are so proud of our Berkeley and thankful that God chose us to be her family.  She is with us in everything that we do.  Always in our hearts.  In her honor and memory, we hope to raise awareness for congenital heart defects and support families as they walk to fight this devastating disease.
